Should you try? Not necessarily my favorite tacos, but they have a good All You Can Eat taco special
I went to Mercadito on a Sunday night, and it was still quite crowded. The place looks small upfront and it was pretty crowded, but it does open up in the back and downstairs. They do have an All You Can Eat Tacos special on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays for $23, which is a good deal. I believe the entire table has to do the special so we passed on it this time. I would come back for this special though
On to the food.
Three guacamoles (traditional, mango, and manzana (apple); $13.50): I heard the portions were small for the guacs, but found it was enough to share. Each of the guacs were good, and Yelpers rave about the mango guac, but I thought it could’ve used more mango.
Elote Mexicano (Mexican style corn on the cob; $5.50): A big fan of the Mexican corn from street fairs so decided to try this out. It came with two pieces, which would come out to the size of one full corn on the cob. It had good flavor mixing chili, cheese and lime. Only complaint is the seasoning was not evenly distributed, but it wasn’t a big deal.
Platanos Machos (Fried plantains; $5.50): They were good, but pretty standard. They were served by themsevlves and could have used a dipping sauce.
Tacos (4 tacos with homemade corn tortillas; $14.50)
- Camarón (shrimp, roasted garlic, chipotle mojo, avocado): Best of the tacos. Sauce was a bit much, but flavor-wise they were the best and had a bit of a kick.
- Carnitas de Puerco (Michoacán style braised pork, chile de árbol coleslaw, toasted peanuts): These could’ve been amazing with the various toppings, but the pork was a bit dry.
- Estilo Baja (crispy beer battered mahi mahi, mexican style coleslaw, chipotle aioli): I had high expectations for the fish taco, but the pieces were tiny and drowned in sauce
